Follow Along With My Choir

March 31, 2019

Today we warmed up and sang our Palm Sunday Songs.  This is our second to last rehearsal before Palm Sunday.  Time to get serious.

There really is only one thing that I’d say was particularly noteworthy about this rehearsal.  We took a moment to pause and really look at the words of the two hymns we are preparing.  We’ve done this before, but this week one boy took particular notice of the words “Thee,” “Thou,” and “Thy.”  He said that he thought this song was very old because those are old words and we don’t really use them any more.  I told him he was right!  The words were first written in Latin in 760 A.D.!  And the tune was composed in the 1600s!

Don’t be too impressed that I know that.  Most hymnals have the year that the songs were written, usually in very tiny print at the bottom.  The hymnal I use most often is called Hosanna, Loud Hosannas:  Student Hymnal.  I hope to write a full review of it soon, but until then, you can check it out for yourself.  Definitely a worthwhile edition for any music lover’s library.
